Biografie
Stefaan Schreel (°1966, Varsenare) studeerde beeldhouwkunst aan Sint-Lucas Gent en studeerde af in 1991. Vanuit die sculpturale basis ontwikkelde hij een geheel eigen beeldtaal waarin kunst en gebruiksvoorwerp naadloos in elkaar overvloeien.
Zijn werk vertrekt niet vanuit trends, maar vanuit een innerlijke noodzaak om vorm te geven. Staal is daarbij zijn voornaamste bondgenoot: krachtig, weerbarstig en tegelijk verfijnd in zijn reflectie. In zijn sculpturen sluimert een ingehouden spanning — een spel van kracht, licht en evenwicht. Elk werk krijgt een unieke sokkel die geen toevoeging is, maar een onlosmakelijk deel van het geheel.
Ook zijn meubelstukken dragen diezelfde artistieke signatuur. Het zijn geen objecten die louter functioneren, maar stukken met een ziel en een verhaal. Schreel werkt bewust met zichtbare constructies en eerlijke materialen, vaak aangevuld met recuperatie-elementen waarvan de geschiedenis wordt geïntegreerd in het ontwerp. Zo ontstaat telkens een nieuw, authentiek geheel in beperkte oplage.
In zijn recentere werk verdiept hij zich in het spanningsveld tussen hout, glas en metaal. Door contrasten te omarmen creëert hij een persoonlijke vormgrammatica waarin staal, techniek en functionaliteit elkaar versterken. Het resultaat is een oeuvre dat tegelijk robuust en verfijnd is — herkenbaar, eigenzinnig en compromisloos.
Onder De Vlucht van het Aambeeld presenteert hij een selectie van zijn creaties, maar elk project groeit vanuit dialoog. Samen met de opdrachtgever zoekt hij naar een vorm die niet alleen past in een ruimte, maar er karakter aan geeft.

Biography
Stefaan Schreel was born in Varsenare, Belgium, in 1966. He completed his studies in sculpture in 1991 in Sint-Lucas in Ghent under Pol Spilliaert and Jan Calmyn.
From the outset he concentrates on making exclusive furniture in limited edition, starting from his mastery as a sculptor and always with a preference for working steel. His pure sculpture shows an internal violence reflected by the light and exhibits a sensitivity that is seemingly hidden away in his extremely austere pieces of furniture. Each sculpture is provided with its unique plinth which forms part of the whole.
The pieces of furniture themselves testify to great honesty, both in terms of material, with respect for specific characteristics and for the legibility of the construction, as well as in working with recuperation materials, giving their history a place within the whole. In the latter case, the editions are quite limited, and when the basic elements are depleted, he starts a new project, which is most noticeable when looking at the furniture is the keen sense of detail and finish. Through the management of a new form-grammar by working with contrasts between wood and metal in his more recent pieces, a plastic journey of discovery is created that remains true to both technical and functional logic, and the following pages show every piece of furniture released by De Vlucht van de Aambeeld. Dès le début, il se concentre sur la fabrication de meubles exclusifs en édition limitée, à partir de sa maîtrise de sculpteur et toujours avec une préférence pour l'emploi du fer. Sa sculpture pure montre une violence intérieure reflétée par la lumière et une sensibilité apparemment cachée dans ses meubles extrêmement austère. Chaque sculpture est pourvue d'un socle unique qui fait partie intégrante de l'ensemble.
Les meubles eux-mêmes témoignent d'une grande honnêteté, tant sur le plan matériel, dans le respect des spécificités et de la lisibilité de la construction, que dans le travail des matériaux de récupération, donnant une place à leur histoire dans l'ensemble. Dans ce dernier cas, les éditions sont assez limitées, et lorsque les éléments de base sont épuisés, il commence un nouveau projet. Ce qui est le plus remarquable est le sens aigu du détail et de la finition. Grâce à la gestion d'une nouvelle grammaire formelle en manipulant les contrastes entre le bois et le métal dans ses pièces les plus récentes, un voyage plastique de découverte est créé qui reste fidèle à la logique à la fois technique et fonctionnelle, et les pages suivantes montrent chaque meuble publié par De Vlucht van de Aambeeld. Dans sa multiplicité ce site ne montre qu'un seul exemple de ce qui est possible: je travaille habituellement avec mes clients pour connaître leurs besoins avant de commencer un design.
